Group Swim Lessons at Reading YMCA

Teaching Water Safety, One Confident Kick at a Time

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4, and second for kids ages 5 to 14. But there’s good news: swim lessons and water safety education drastically reduce that risk.

At the YMCA of Reading, our swim lesson program is more than just learning to float. It’s about building lifelong skills, boosting confidence, and creating a safe, fun relationship with the water. We offer lessons for ages 1 and up, so whether your child is just dipping their toes in or mastering their strokes, we have the right level for them.

Swim Lesson Details:

  • Class Days: Mondays & Wednesdays only
  • Each Session Includes: Six, 30-minute lessons
  • Location: Reading Swimming Pool, 631 Washington St., Reading, PA 19601
  • Cost: $100 for YMCA Members | $150 for Non-Members

Aquababies: Water Discovery & Exploration

Ages 1–3 | Parent & Child Class

Drowning remains one of the top causes of accidental death in young children, but introducing your child to the water early can make all the difference.

Our Aquababies swim lessons are designed for little ones ages 1 to 3 and their trusted grown-up. With a strong focus on safety, comfort, and early skill development, this class gently introduces babies and toddlers to the water through guided play and exploration.

Together, you and your child will splash, float, and giggle your way through essential water safety skills, all while strengthening the bond between you. It’s more than just a swim lesson, it’s quality time that builds confidence and sets the foundation for lifelong comfort in the water.

Level 1: Water Acclimation

Ages 3–14 | Beginner Swim Lessons

Learning to swim starts with building comfort and confidence in the water, and that’s exactly what Level 1 is all about. This beginner class is designed for children with little to no swim experience who are ready to take their first independent steps toward water safety.

Instructors guide swimmers through the basics, including how to safely enter and exit the pool, submerge their face, blow bubbles, float on their front and back, and begin moving through the water with support.

This is a gentle, progress-based class that helps kids feel safe, supported, and proud of every splashy milestone. Whether your child is hesitant or just new to lessons, Level 1 offers the perfect starting point.

Level 1: Water Acclimation – Morning Session

Ages 3–14 | Entry-Level Swim Skills

This introductory swim class helps young swimmers take their first steps toward water safety and independence. Designed for kids who are new to swim lessons or still gaining confidence in the pool, Level 1 focuses on building comfort in the water through simple, supportive instruction.

Participants will practice skills like entering and exiting the pool safely, putting their face in the water, blowing bubbles, floating with assistance, and basic front and back movement. Our caring instructors create a fun, encouraging environment where every swimmer can feel successful, one splash at a time.

Level 2: Water Movement – Afternoon Session

Ages 3–14 | Building Strength & Swim Independence

Once your swimmer is comfortable in the water, it’s time to level up! Our Level 2 class focuses on developing body control, breath coordination, and movement through the water, helping kids transition from assisted skills to more independent swimming.

In this class, swimmers continue practicing pool safety and work on mastering skills like submerging completely, gliding through the water, rolling from back to front, and maintaining a back float. They’ll also begin learning the basic motions of freestyle and breaststroke.

This is the perfect next step for children who have completed Level 1 or can already float and move with some support. Progress comes quickly when confidence meets good technique!

Level 2: Water Movement – Morning Session

Ages 3–14 | Skill Building for Young Swimmers

This class is ideal for swimmers who are ready to go beyond the basics. Level 2 introduces more complex water movements, encourages independence, and strengthens swimming technique. Students will refine their ability to glide, float, submerge, and begin coordinating strokes.

Instructors focus on water safety while guiding swimmers through transitions like rolling from back to front, improving breath control, and learning the foundational elements of freestyle and breaststroke. It’s a motivating, movement-filled class for those ready to take their swimming to the next level!

Whether your child has completed Level 1 or already feels comfortable floating and kicking, this is the next step in their swim journey.

Level 3: Water Stamina – Morning Session

Ages 3–14 | Endurance, Technique & Independence

In Level 3, swimmers take their skills to the next level by building stamina, refining technique, and learning to stay safe while swimming longer distances. This class is perfect for children who are confident in the water and ready to combine strength with skill.

With instructor guidance, swimmers will practice retrieving objects from below the surface, swimming underwater, learning the backstroke, improving breath control, and performing skills like treading water and the swim-float-swim sequence. These techniques help children swim further, rest when needed, and stay calm in the water, essential life-saving skills.

Level 3 is designed for students who have completed Levels 1 and 2 or have equivalent comfort and ability in the pool.

Levels 3 & 4: Water Stamina + Stroke Skills – Afternoon Session

Ages 3–14 | Intermediate to Advanced Swim Development

This combined class is perfect for swimmers who are building real strength in the water and working toward advanced stroke techniques. Whether your child is mastering the basics of underwater movement or learning to refine their strokes, this session offers challenge, support, and structured progression.

Level 3 swimmers will improve their endurance through underwater swimming, back floating, retrieving objects, and the swim-float-swim sequence—all while continuing to practice pool safety and breath control.

Level 4 swimmers will build on that foundation by learning proper stroke form and technique for freestyle, backstroke, and more. They’ll also work on treading for longer periods, basic diving skills, and increasing stamina across all movements.

Our experienced instructors will group swimmers by skill and guide them through personalized instruction based on their current level.

Levels 5 & 6: Stroke Development & Mechanics – Afternoon Session

Advanced Swim Skills | Preparing for Swim Team & Beyond

This advanced combo class is designed for swimmers who have mastered foundational techniques and are ready to focus on precision, power, and performance. Levels 5 & 6 take everything learned in earlier classes and transform it into efficient, competitive swimming.

Level 5 swimmers will work on refining each major stroke, freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, while learning skills like diving, proper flip turns, and pacing for endurance.

Level 6 swimmers take it a step further by polishing stroke mechanics, improving speed, and gaining the technical skills needed for swim team participation. This course focuses on fluid movement, legal stroke execution, and race-ready transitions.

Instructors offer individualized guidance within the group to challenge each swimmer appropriately and promote continuous growth in technique and stamina.
